Enhancement courses

Enhancement courses popularly known as ECs are intended to provide students with some of the much needed soft skills throughout their university career. With the recognition that professional development requires more than acquiring knowledge, every effort is made to facilitate the development these skills through a wide range of specially designed non-academic courses which promotes personality development, improves communication skills and allows students to gain competence in activities of their liking such as dance, music, sports, photography.

  • ECs are incorporated into the regular academic time table so allowing students to manage their academic workload.
  • ECs are essential for completion of the degree. Each EC is assigned a credit rating and a student is expected to obtain a minimum of four credits from enhancement courses offered by the faculty over the 3-4 years.
  • Specific conditions and criteria may be applicable for the individual courses.

*Students can obtain EC credits by participating in a range of sports conducted by the Department of Physical Education of the University of Colombo. The range of sports activities and the training venues are given below:

Conditions

Students offering sports as an Enhancement Course in the Faculty of Science will be required to follow the three criteria given below.

  1. A Three year General Degree student offering sports as an Enhancement Course would have to register for the respective sport at least by the end of the first semester in the third year in the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Science.
  2.  A Four year General Degree or Special Degree student offering sports as an Enhancement Course would have to register for the respective sport at least by the end of the first semester in the fourth year at the dean’s office, Faculty of Science.
  3. The sports credit form should be filled in duplicate, with one copy to be handed over to the Deans Office, Faculty of Science and the other to be handed over to the Department of Physical Education, at least by the end of the second semester of the respective year.

These criteria will be effective from 2012. Students who have not followed the above procedure will not be eligible for sports credits.
