All candidates must satisfy the following minimum requirements
- An MSc degree from a recognized university or
- A BSc Honours/ Special Degree from a recognized university in the relevant area of study or
- A BSc General Degree from a recognized University with courses/subjects relevant to the area of study or
- Any other relevant qualifications acceptable to the University of Colombo
How to apply
A person seeking admission to an MPhil or PhD Programme in the Faculty of Science must make an application on a prescribed form (collected from the Academic Publications Department or downloaded from the web) to the Head of the relevant Department of Study, with the recommendation of the supervisor/supervisors, under whom the candidate wishes to work. In filling the application, the candidate must furnish information on the qualifications and other details required for the programme. The candidate must also, under the guidance of the supervisor/s, present the research proposal before a panel of academics in the relevant department. Once approved, the student may register in the PGSIS (https://sci.cmb.ac.lk/pg/sis/).
The duly completed application must be submitted through the supervisor/s and the Head of the relevant department along with evidence of registration in the PGSIS, to the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty of Science for approval.
If accepted, the candidate will be notified through a letter, to make the required payments before a specified date. The date of registration will be the date on which the duly completed application was received at the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Science. In some cases, the HDC might recommend that the candidate passes a qualifying examination in the appropriate field of study for which the student must obtain a pass (50 %). This examination should be completed within 9 months from the date of registration.
Structure and Duration
MPhil Degree: The minimum period of study will be two years for full time candidates and three years for part time candidates and the deadline for completion will be five years for full time candidates and seven years for part time candidates.
PhD Degree: The minimum period of study will be three years for full time candidates and five years for part time candidates and the deadline for completion will be seven years for full time candidates and nine years for part time candidates.
Research will be conducted in a specified field or fields under the guidance of a supervisor/supervisors and progress will be evaluated on a yearly basis. Note: All candidates will be initially registered for an MPhil Degree which would be upgraded to a PhD upon the completion of two years of research work and if the student has published either one scientific paper or two scientific abstracts based on the research work.
