Chemical Society (ChemSoc)

he Chemical Society of the Department of Chemistry was formed in year 2000 with the intention of promoting and encouraging a greater awareness of Chemistry among the students of the Faculty of Science. Over the past few years the society has undertaken many initiatives in order to uphold the interest towards Chemistry.


The Inter-School Chemistry Quiz Competition organized by the Chemical Society was successfully held on 5th of July 2012 with the participation of more than 150 students studying in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Science Stream from 50 leading schools island wide. The overall championship was won by the Royal College, Colombo 07 while Sujatha Vidyalaya, Matara became the runner up after a competitive final round.

The champions received Rs. 20,000 in cash; a trophy and gold medals as prizes while the runners up received Rs. 10,000 in cash and silver medals at the end of the event. In addition, each participant of every school was awarded a certificate. The objective of conducting this event was to enhance the advanced education in Chemistry by sharing the knowledge among students and drawing their attention on the practical applications of chemistry.


It was a great pleasure for the Chemical Society to join and support the First National Science Camp organized by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The objective of holding the science camp was to give the school students a hand on experience in laboratory experiments, expose them to newer concepts in science & technology and make science education exciting and enjoyable to them. The camp was organized aiming the students of the Kalutara District and was fruitfully held at Aluthgama M.M.V. on 21st of January 2013.


The major event of the year calendar of the Chemical Society, the Chemistry Day 2013, was successfully held on 14th February 2013 at the New Arts Theatre of the University of Colombo. Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama, Chairperson of the University Grants Commission graced the occasion as the chief guest. The core of this event was the publication of “Resonance” magazine which was reborn; after the year 1992. The final round of the Inter-School Chemistry Quiz Competition was also taken place on this day.

The event was certainly a blending of eminent personalities in the field of chemistry and the participants received the opportunity of following lectures delivered by Prof. Gehan Amaratunga (University of Cambridge) as well as by Dr. Mubarak (Former Director – ITI). At the end of the day, the participants were able to entertain themselves by watching the magic of chemistry at the Chemical Magic Show.
