Mini-Hackathon 2023
A Kickstart to Innovation
The Mini Hackathon 2023 is organized by the Stat Circle of University of Colombo in collaboration with Octave as a part of the 2 nd International Conference in Data Science in Sri Lanka (ICDS 2023).
This initiative mainly aims at addressing the growing need for skilled statisticians by providing a platform for the emerging talent to enhance their data analysis capabilities, learn valuable programming skills, and engage in problem-solving through data-driven approaches. Going beyond just elevating the quality of statistical insight, the Mini Hackathon 2023 is a platform to improve public exposure to data data-driven solutions.
This ultimate hackathon experience is open for undergraduates from both state and private universities in Sri Lanka The Hackathon is a semi-virtual event with 4 featured phases,
- 1. Introductory webinar – 25th of November 2023 (Virtual Session)
- 2. Preliminary Round – 2nd of December 2023 (Online round conducted through the Kaggle platform)
- 3. Analytics Bootcamp – 9th of December 2023(Virtual Session)
- 4. Finale – 16th of December (Onsite)
The Winners of Mini Hackathon 2023 will be announced at the International Conference in Data Science 2023 which will be happening on the 19th and 20th of December 2023.
General Competition Guidelines
- A team should consist of a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 4 members.
- Registrations will be open from the 9th of November 2023 until 23rd of November 2023.
- Undergraduates from both state and private universities are eligible to participate in the competition.
- Each university is permitted to register any number of teams per faculty/affiliated institution.
- The participation of all team members is mandatory in each round.

- There will be 4 phases: Introductory Webinar, Preliminary round, Analytics Bootcamp, and the Final round.
- The Top 15 teams who get the highest score in terms of the model performance metrics and the report in the preliminary round will be selected for the On-site Finale.
- Out of the top 15 teams, the top 5 teams will be selected to the final round by a panel of experts.
- Thereafter, the top 5 teams will be ranked by a panel of experts based on their solution and presentation(pitch).
- A general awareness of Data Analytics Algorithms, Data Analytics Tools and Software will be sufficient as a background requirement for the contestants.
