Academic Annual Planning Workshop 2022

The Faculty of Science successfully conducted its 3rd  Annual Planning Workshop on April 29, 2022 at the Auditorium of the Information Learning Centre, Faculty of Science. The main objective of the workshop was to review activities proposed at 2nd Annual Planning Workshop (held on March 26, 2021) and develop a next year Action Plan based on 4 broad themes including enhance the internal undergraduate degree programmes, improve the internal efficiency of fund generating activities, development of research/innovation & commercialization and new development of Library resources | Centers.  Under these 4 themes, 8 key areas were identified and the Coordinators of the 8 key areas were presented the progress of the last year & the future expectations regarding the each key area.

  • Structure of Information Technology Service Centre & Development of IT Resources –  Dr  Hiran Jayaweera, Director | ITSC
  • Development of Undergraduate Degree Programmes –  Dr Dilhari Attygalle , Director | Undergraduate Studies
  • Internal Efficiency of MSc Programmes – Prof Mayuri Wijesinghe, Director | Postgraduate Studies
  • Development of External Degree & Extension Programmes – Prof Sanjeewa Perera – Director | Open Distance Learning Centre
  • Research & MPhil/PhD Degree Programmes – Prof Preethi Udagama, Chairperson | Faculty Research Committee
  • Innovation & Cell Activities– Dr M N Kaumal, CEO | Colombo Science & Technology Cell
  • Library Resources – Ms Sajeewani Somarathna, SAL | Science Library
  • Development of Centers /Units – Dr Kaveesha Wijesinghe 

The workshop was well attended by the Faculty members and many vital strategies and implementation plans with regard to the development the Faculty were identified at this event. Certificate awarding ceremony of the Faculty Awards (2020) for Research Excellence and Academic Outreach Excellence was also held at this event, which was graced by Senior Professor HD Karunarathna, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo. 3rd Annual Planning Workshop was organized by the Faculty Quality Assurance Cell.

Non-Academic Annual Planning Workshop 2022

The Faculty of Science successfully conducted its 1st Non-Academic Annual Planning Workshop on April 22, 2022, at the Auditorium of the Information and Learning Centre, Faculty of Science. The main objective of the workshop was to obtain feedback from Non-Academic Staff on how they could increase their efficiency and contribute more to the development of the faculty. The workshop aimed to identify the present drawbacks in Laboratory Management (which includes Chemical, Biological, Physical and Computer Science), Office Management and Human Resource Management. The coordinators (from Non-Academic staff) of the committees set up for five key areas made presentations on the drawbacks and on the possible solutions.

The workshop was well attended.   Prof HD Karunarathna, Vice- Chancellor, University of Colombo, addressed the gathering and Prof Upul Sonnadara, Dean, Faculty of Science, presented an overview of the faculty. The objectives of the workshop were presented by Prof Sanjeewa Perera, Chairperson of the QA Cell, Faculty of Science. The welcome speech was delivered by Ms Tharushika Pathirage, SAR, Faculty of Science. The ensuing discussions were facilitated by Prof Chamari Hettiarachchi and Prof Deepthi Wickremasinghe. 

The morning session was followed by a special session for the Technical Officers of the Faculty of Science in the afternoon. This session which was entitled “Engaging in research” was organized by the Research Committee of the Faculty of Science. The main objective of this workshop was to make the Technical Officers of the faculty aware of the importance of engaging in research activities within the department. Three academic staff members – Prof Preethi Udagama (Chairperson, Research Committee, Faculty of Science), Prof Chandrika Nannayakkara (Department of Plant Sciences) and Dr MN Kaumal (Department of Chemistry),  and Mr JARC Jayakody (Chief Technical Officer, Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences) spoke on topics covering available research options, selecting an appropriate research area, how to balance routine work and research activities and on the benefits of engaging in research. There was an interactive discussion at the end of this session. This special session was well attended.
