Rationale

This degree programme aims to fulfill an emerging important need in the corporate sector of Sri Lanka and elsewhere. Globally, regionally and locally, environmental issues have become very important in the conduct of a business as well its long term sustainability. Therefore, it is necessary for businesses to incorporate environmental considerations into its entire range of activities including reporting.  Sri Lanka as an emerging economy needs personnel with scientific knowledge and skills to address environmental concerns of the private sector organisations along with the attitudes required for work in businesses. In the final year of study, each student will be placed in a relevant industry with a strong sustainability programme to carry out an industry relevant research project as well as obtain training in an industrial setting. This provides both exposure to the real world of work as well as training in research for postgraduate studies. Further explanation of this type of degree is given page 10 of the Undergraduate Handbook of the Faculty of Science. This degree programme with its suite of courses with a very strong emphasis on skills development will fulfill requirements of the graduate profile as well as thost of industry. The degree is awarded upon completion of 120 credits along with all other requirements as given in the Undergraduate Handbook of the Faculty of Science.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes

A graduate of the Business and Environment Honors degree from the Faculty of Science should possess competencies and characteristics that fall into four broad but essential areas: Scholar, Entrepreneur, Innovator and Global Citizen. Each course of this programme has Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) that contribute to these and at the end of the programme of study fulfills the programme ILOs.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this programme, A minimum GPA of 2.50 at the end of Level II for all registered academic courses. See also page 24 of the Undergraduate Handbook of the Faculty of Science.
