Offered by the Department of Physics

Since the Department of Physics was established in 1942 and the BSc Honours in Physics degree has been the very first honors programme to be offered and it continues to enable students gain contemporary knowledge in Physics and an apt towards research. The degree provides an excellent launching pad intended mainly for a career with an academic focus. A total of 120 credit hours are required to complete the degree programme and during the last two years, a special emphasis is placed on all core areas of physics, which also includes skills development related to experimental physics. Students also require completing a final year research project under the close supervision of a faculty member with a focus on a problem related to a major research interest of the department.

Degree Aims

  • Provide a sound conceptual basis in core Physics: classical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, quantum mechanics, modern physics and statistical thermodynamics.
  • Transfer concepts and principles in the formulation and solving of representative physics problems and situations in different branches of physics.
  • Devise appropriate experimentation to test scientific hypotheses and to demonstrate working knowledge on ethical conduct, practiced in the scientific enterprise.
  • Gain awareness on the impact of physics on the socio-economic fabric and environment in a global context and demonstrate responsible conduct therein while demonstration of responsible citizenship, emotional control and ability to act beyond self-interest towards creating an equitable society.
