Inauguration of Sri Lanka’s First Quantum Computing Facility

On 21 January 2026, the University of Colombo officially inaugurated Sri Lanka’s first quantum computer at the Centre for Mathematical Modelling (CMM). The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Indika Karunathilake, Vice‑Chancellor, and Prof. Upul Sonnadara, Dean of the Faculty of Science, with participation from Dr. D. B. Dharmasena, Head of the Department of Mathematics, and Prof. Sanjeewa Perera, Director of CMM. Prof. Anuradha Mahasinghe, who has been leading quantum computing initiatives for several years, provided an overview of the project and its academic significance.

The quantum computer, developed by SpinQ and based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology, was demonstrated using foundational quantum algorithms and modelling frameworks created by CMM researchers and their collaborators. In addition to its two physical qubits, the platform incorporates a powerful simulator, providing a valuable resource for advanced research and training in quantum computing at CMM. This inauguration represents a significant milestone in strengthening national capacity for quantum technologies.
