“25 FOR 25: Empowering Futures” Scholarship Program Announcement Dear Students, Faculty, and Friends of the Faculty of Science, The alumni of the Class of 2001/2002 from the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, are proud to announce the “25 FOR 25: Empowering Futures” scholarship to mark our Silver Jubilee, celebrating 25 remarkable years since we started our Journey at the University of Colombo. This initiative is a heartfelt tribute to our shared academic journey and reflects our collective commitment to supporting the next generation of scientists at our alma mater. Alumni from the Class of 2001/2002, now residing across the globe, have come together to establish this scholarship fund, reflecting our collective gratitude and belief in the transformative power of education. Scholarship Details:
    • Name: 25 FOR 25: Empowering Futures
    • Sponsor: Alumni of the Class of 2001/2002, Faculty of Science, University of Colombo.
    • Purpose: To empower promising undergraduate students by providing financial assistance that enables them to focus on their academic and personal development amidst prevailing economic challenges.
    • Target Recipients: The scholarships will be available for Second-year students in the Faculty of Science.
    • Duration and Value: Total scholarship value: LKR 120,000 per student, distributed as a monthly stipend of LKR 5000 for two years.
    • Selection Criteria: The selection process will be based on a merit-cum-need. framework to ensure that the scholarship supports students who demonstrate both strong academic potential and/ or genuine financial need.
    • Application period: May 4-May 29, 2026
    • Review period: June 1- June 26, 2026
    • Scholarship Announcement/Awards: July 2026 (exact dates will be announced later)
Academic and career mentorship may be offered to scholarship recipients as an additional, optional benefit, based on individual needs and interests.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
  1. Enrollment Status
    • Must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student in the Faculty of Science at the University of Colombo.
    • Must be pursuing a degree program of at least 3-4 years duration.
    • Current year of study: Beginning of the 2nd year
  2. Academic Requirements
    • Must have achieved a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA/GPA) of 3.0 out of 4.0 at the time of application.
    • Must demonstrate strong academic merit through:
      • Consistent performance in university examinations
      • Not Mandatory but beneficial: Class ranking, Dean’s List, awards, publications, or other recognitions
    • Must not have failed or repeated any course/subject in the previous academic year(s) without valid extenuating circumstances
  3. Economic Need (for Need-Based Consideration)
    • Annual gross family/household income must not exceed the prevailing ceiling set by the relevant authorities for Mahapola or bursary schemes
    • Applicants must provide verifiable supporting documents (e.g., Grama Niladhari certificate and a copy of the most recent electricity bill)
    • Special consideration may be given to applicants facing documented financial hardship (e.g., due to parental unemployment, large family size, medical expenses, or impacts of economic crises)
  4. Age Limit
    • Must not exceed 30 years of age as of the application deadline (exceptions may apply for mature students or those with valid reasons, subject to committee discretion)
  5. Conduct
    • Must maintain a good disciplinary record (no major disciplinary actions or university warnings)
    • Demonstrate satisfactory active engagement in studies
  6. Other Scholarships and Employment
    • Students who receive other scholarships are eligible to apply
  7. Application Completeness
    • Must submit a complete application by the specified deadline, including:
      • Academic transcripts and certificates (copy of the results from SIS)
      • Grama Niladhari certificate and a copy of the most recent electricity bill
      • A scholarship consideration essay (max 500 words)
      • Any other supplementary documents (proof of income and financial need documents)
Additional Notes
  • Meeting the above criteria makes an applicant eligible to apply, but does not guarantee selection. Final awards are competitive and based on the final scoring.
  • Priority may be given to applicants with high academic standing and/or who meet income eligibility criteria.
  • Recipients must maintain eligibility (e.g., minimum GPA of 3.0, full-time enrollment, good conduct) to continue receiving the scholarship in subsequent years.
  • False information or misrepresentation will result in disqualification.
