The University of Colombo proudly held its General Convocation 2025 – Phase II on 29 and 30 August 2026 at the prestigious Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo. The two-day convocation marked a significant milestone in the academic journey of the graduates, celebrating their dedication, perseverance, and achievements throughout their years of undergraduate study.

The ceremonial proceedings were honoured by the presence of the Venerable Chancellor, Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thero, and the Vice Chancellor, Professor Indika Karunathilake, together with the Rector, Deans of the Faculties, Directors of Institutes, Registrar, Acting Librarian, Bursar, members of the academic and administrative staff, distinguished guests, and the graduands. The gathering provided an opportunity for the University community to celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates and to recognise their transition from university education to the next chapter of their academic and professional lives.

The conferment of the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Bachelor of Science Honours (BSc Honours) degrees of the Faculty of Science took place on 30 August 2026. During this significant ceremony, the Vice Chancellor formally conferred degrees upon 129 graduates of the BSc General programme and 405 graduates of the BSc Honours programmes of the Faculty of Science.

The occasion was a celebration not only of the successful completion of undergraduate education but also of the academic excellence demonstrated by the graduates. The conferral of these degrees marked the culmination of years of learning, research, practical training, examination, and personal development, reflecting the commitment of the graduates as well as the guidance and support provided by the academic and administrative community of the Faculty of Science.

The ceremony also provided an opportunity to honour students who had distinguished themselves through exceptional academic performance and achievement. Gold medals and prestigious awards were presented to recognise outstanding graduates whose dedication, intellectual curiosity, academic excellence, and commitment to their respective disciplines set them apart among their peers.

Highlights

Open Awards – D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize

The D. P. P. Samarasekara Peace Prize was awarded to Mr. E. M. V. N. Thismalpola, a graduate of the Faculty of Science who successfully completed the Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Statistics, achieving a Second Class Upper Division.

The award recognises an individual whose achievements and qualities reflect the values of academic excellence, integrity, and commitment to the wider community. This recognition stands as a testament to Mr. Thismalpola’s dedication and accomplishments during his undergraduate career at the Faculty of Science.

The Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, extends its warmest congratulations to Mr. E. M. V. N. Thismalpola on receiving this prestigious award. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved achievement and wish him continued success in all his future academic and professional endeavours.

 Justin Samarasekera Award for the Most Outstanding Science Student of the Year

The Justin Samarasekera Award for the Most Outstanding Science Student of the Year was awarded to S. T. Wickramasinghe, in recognition of outstanding academic performance and achievement.

 

This prestigious recognition celebrates exceptional academic excellence among the students of the Faculty of Science and highlights the commitment, determination, and intellectual ability demonstrated throughout the undergraduate programme.

The General Convocation was a memorable occasion for the graduates, their families, academic mentors, and the wider University community. It marked the culmination of an important chapter in the lives of the graduates while also symbolising the beginning of new opportunities and responsibilities as they embark on their respective professional, academic, and personal journeys.

The Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, extends its warmest and most heartfelt congratulations to all graduates who received their degrees at this year’s convocation. Their achievements are a source of great pride to the Faculty, and we acknowledge with appreciation the dedication and perseverance that brought them to this important milestone.

As they move forward to pursue further studies, embark on professional careers, contribute to research and innovation, and serve society in diverse capacities, the Faculty wishes all graduates every success and fulfilment in their future endeavours. May the knowledge, skills, experiences, and values gained during their time at the University of Colombo continue to guide and inspire them throughout their lives.
