Capacity Building Workshop for Non-Academic Staff – 2025 Faculty of Science, University of Colombo.
A one-day “Capacity Building Workshop” organized by the Non-Academic Staff Development Committee (NA-SDC) of the Faculty of Science was successfully held on 5th November 2025 at the Wijaya Holiday Resort, Kiriella. The workshop was designed to enhance professional skills, build camaraderie and provide feedback on the overall effectiveness of the non-academic staff of the Faculty, in line with the objectives of the Quality Assurance Action Committee (QAAc) of the Faculty of Science.
The purposes of the program were to empower non-academic staff members, strengthen teamwork, communication and interpersonal relationships, develop leadership, problem-solving and time management skills, promote a positive work culture and a service-oriented mindset, encourage motivation and commitment to organizational goals, and support the faculty’s ongoing efforts for staff development.
The one-day program included a variety of interactive and engaging sessions.
⮚ Team building activities
⮚ Leadership and communication exercises
⮚ Group problem-solving discussions
⮚ Entertaining and motivational segments
⮚ Emphasis and feedback discussions were key among them.
These activities enabled participants to actively engage with each other, build trust and explore strategies to improve workplace collaboration and efficiency.
The workshop successfully achieved its intended outcomes. The feedback received was overwhelmingly positive, with participants rating the program as “very effective” and “excellent”. Participants also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of teamwork, professional responsibility, and the institutional values of the faculty, particularly in terms of collaboration, mutual understanding, trust, and morale among non-academic staff.
It was recognized that strengthening collaboration with QAA is essential for the quality development of non-academic staff and thereby for the continuity and sustainability of the faculty, to overcome the future world of work and to contribute to the creation of a quality generation of students.
Furthermore, the Committee concludes that the 2025 Capacity Development Workshop was a valuable and productive start and that it made a significant contribution to the professional development of non academic staff and to the enhancement of the overall quality culture within the faculty, and therefore the program should be continued as an annual activity.
On behalf of the Faculty of Science Non-Academic Staff Development Committee, we would like to express our gratitude to all those who contributed to the successful implementation of this program, including the administrative officers of the faculty.
