Plant a Tree Challenge
Plants nurture and sustain life on earth. As the Faculty of Science celebrate 100 years of excellence in Science, a tree planting challenge was organized by the Department of Plant Sciences to commemorate the event. This task took a fresh approach as it used the “Facebook” platform to disseminate the message and attract people to plant trees. The participants were asked to plant a tree, post a picture on their Facebook profile and challenge five or more of their friends to do the same.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Colombo, Professor Chandrika Wijeyaratne initiated the challenge by ceremonially planting a “Murutha tree” (Lagerstroemia speciosa) on the faculty premises on January 21st 2021 and challenged five friends on her Facebook account. We are delighted that we have already completed planting 100 trees to commemorate 100 years of excellence in science. Our enthusiastic participants will continue the challenge leaving an everlasting mark on our planet in celebration of 100 years of the faculty of science.
