Conducted by Astronomy and Space Science Unit, Department of Physics, University of Colombo

The Diploma in Astronomy is a one-year course, which is designed for students who have studied the Certificate Course in Astronomy, or who have a similar level of knowledge and experience. The course will allow you to develop a broader perspective on astronomical phenomena and practical methods to investigate them, as well as deeper understanding research methods. You will build up astronomical knowledge across all physical scales from planets to the Universe. You will also gain practical skills in using telescopes and related data gathering instruments and interpreting astronomical data using computer
applications.

You will delve deeper into topics covered and explore more advanced concepts. A particular focus will be the variety of techniques used by astronomers, both historically and in current research, and you will learn how observational evidences combine with theoretical concepts.

Eligibility

Completion of GCE Advanced Level in Physical Science/Biological Science/ Technology OR pass London Advanced Level in Mathematics/Physics OR GCE Ordinary Level with a merit pass or a medal in an Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad conducted at national or international level followed by passing an aptitude test.

Commencement

Course Structure

The course will be conducted physically on Saturdays/Sundays from 8.30 am 12.30 pm. The course duration is one year.

Program Duration

The duration of the course will be 12 months (part-time) including the periods of study leave and examinations. The courses will be conducted on weekends.

Intended learning outcomes

  • Extend students’ knowledge of key topics in astronomy by introducing more advanced topics.
  • Give students a wider perspective and more in-depth understanding of the variety of observed astronomical phenomena (e.g. phenomena associated with binary star systems and their evolution, exoplanets and/or high-energy astrophysical processes).
  • Explain why a wide range of approaches are required for tackling different problems in astronomy (e.g. cosmology at early and late times)
  • Demonstrate how complementary techniques, including multi-wavelength observations, computer simulations and mathematical techniques can be used to build self-consistent models of astronomical phenomena.
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop practical skills in working with astronomical data and to explore computer simulations.
