The University is ideally located in the heart of the historic city of Colombo known as the Cinnamon Gardens. The city located on the West coast of the island is often referred to as the capital of Sri Lanka since colonial times. In fact the legacies of colonial Colombo’s garden roots are still very much intact along its shady boulevards. The Science Faculty itself holds such landmarks of prestige as it is home to the iconic Old Royal College Building as well as the King George’s Hall.
Detailed driving directions are provided below which will take you to the Science faculty of the University of Colombo residing between Thurstan road and Reid Avenue.
Road
Coming from the southern coast of the island the University can be visited via the A2 highway. The highway passes through Hambantota, Hikkaduwa, Ambalangoda, Kosgoda, Bentota, Beruwala, Kalutara, Wadduwa, Panadura, Ratmalana, Mount Lavinia, Wellawatte, Bambalapitiya, Kollupitya. The West most portion of the high way is known as Galle road.
- Via bus
Take any bus running to Colombo Fort running this route. The best way to get to the faculty is to get down at the Bambalapitiya Junction and take 154 or 155. The faculty is just 15 minutes away from Bambalapitiya. Taking 154 drop down near laksala and walk through to Thurstan road. 155 goes through Thurstan road itself. If residing anywhere between Rathmalana and Bambalapitiya the journey can begin taking either one of the buses 154 or 155. - Via private transportation
Be wary of the one-way system implemented after the Milagiriya junction which is confusing to many. Taking the A2 highway passing through Bambalitiya take a left turn to Alfred House Garden. Just as R. A. De-mel mawatha is accessed take a left turn to Queens’s road. Proceed to Thurstan road and take the right most lane. The entrance to the faculty is on the left just beyond the pedestrian crossing traffic lights.
Rail
The University lies closest to the Bambalapitya train station. The coastal railway line follows the A2 highway and is preferred my many as the rides are often cheap and less time consuming. The coastal line starts from Matara and goes through many many major stations such as Mirissa, Koggala, Unawatuna, Galle, Boossa, Hikkaduwa, Ahungalla, Benthota, Aluthgama, Kaluthara, Wadduwa, Panadura, Moratuwa, Mount Lavina and Wellawatta respectively. Bambalapitiya station is 25 minutes away on foot from the University. Buses run every 10 minutes following the normal route of 154 buses. Taxis are also available for hire at the station.
Road
The A1 highway serves as the main gateway to access Colombo from Kandy. The highway passes through Kandy Peradeniya Pilimathalawa Kadugannawa Mawanella Kegalle Galigamuwa Ambepussa Warakapola Wevaldeniya Nittambuwa Nittambuwa, Yakkala Eldeniya Kiribathgoda Kelaniya Maligawatta Panchikawatta Maradaana and Colombo-Fort.

Take any bus travelling to Colombo-Fort via this route. At Fort take one any of 120,122,125,138 busses to travel to Campus from Colombo Fort. Another option is to drop down at Kiribathgoda. From there one can take 154 and get down near Laksala (Thummulla) and walk through to Thurstan road. 154 passes through Kiribathgoda, Kelaniya, Peliygoda, Dematagoda, Borella, Torinton and Thummulla. - Via private transportation
Approach to Panchikawatta following the A1 highway. Take a left turn to Panchikawatta Road. At the Maradana Junction take a left turn to P De S Kularatne Mawatha. In 200m turn right to access Ven Baddeegama Wimalawansa Mawatha. At the De Soysa Roundabout continue onto CWW Kannangara Mawatha. As the Nelum Pokuna theatre is passed turn left to Independence Avenue. Take a slight right onto Philip Gunawardana Mawatha. Continue straight to find the UCSC (University of Colombo School of Computing) entrance on the right to access the Faculty of Science.
Rail
The main rail line runs from Badulla to Colombo Fort. It goes through Badulla, Demodara, Bandarawela, Haputale, Ambewela, Nanu Oya, Hatton, Nawalapitiya, Gampola, Peradeniya, Pilimathalawa, Rambukkana, Ambepussa, Mirigama, Gaampaha, Ragama, Kelaniya, Dematagoda, Maradana and Colombo Fort. Kandy railway station is situated along the Matale railway line. The Matale line runs through Matale, Ukuwella, Patanpaha, Wattegama, Uda Thalawinna, Katugastota, Mahaiyawa, Kandy, Sarasavi Uyana and Peradeniya. The Matale line joins the main line at the Peradeniya Station. The preferable mean of getting to the Faculty is to take any of the buses 120,122,125 or 138 after getting there on rail. It’s also sensible to take the train to Bambalapitiya after reaching Fort as it is the nearest railway station to the University.
Road
The A4 highway is the longest highway in Sri Lanka. Rathnapura is one of the main cities it passes through. From there it runs through Kuruwita, Awissawella, Hanwella, Godagama, Homagama, Kottawa, Pannipitya, Maharagama, Nawinna, Nugegoda, Kirulapana right through to Colombo. The region of the highway closer to Colombo is known as the High Level road.
- Via bus
Take any convenient bus to reach Awissawella, Homagama or any town residing along the A4 coming after Homagama. The bus routes 138/1, 138/2, 138/3, 122, 125 for the most part run through the A4 highway. It is possible to take any convenient option to drop down at the Faculty of Science.-
138/1 – Homagama to Fort
On its entire route follows the A4 highway. -
138/2 – Mattegoda to Fort
Starting at Mattegoda the route runs through Horana road to join the A4 highway at Kottawa. -
138/3 – Rukmalgama to Fort
The route runs through Athurugiriya road after starting at Rukmalgama. It also joins the Highlevel road at Kottawa. -
122 – Avissawella to Fort
The long distance bus which starts at Awissawella follows the A4 highway until well after the Faculty of Science is surpassed. Note: there are some 122 routes which starts at Rathnapura.

Approach the Thummulla Junction via the A4 Highway. The stretch of the A4 highway coming after the Thummulla junction is known as the Thurstan road. Faculty of Science is situated within that road stretch. The faculty gate is found on the right just 600m away from Thummulla.
