Nature's Poem “Vowels and consonants among stones and leaves”
Have you ever wanted to take a step back from your hectic life, and truly pay attention to your surroundings? To close your eyes for a minute and feel your heart beating in sync with the euphonious sounds of nature? The roar of the sea, the rustling of leaves, the whisper of a zephyr, the pitter-patter of raindrops, the hazy murmurs of cascades? These sounds of nature bring us a step closer to Music.
Music is a construct that emerged as a result of ancient humans trying to replicate the natural sounds they heard, that evoked emotions in them. It is one of the best therapies for our frantic minds. Scientific research shows that music influences living beings on a visceral level. We hear it, we feel it, and now, we are here to share it.
BEEZ, the Base for Enthusiasts of Environmental Science and Zoology, is partnering up with Euphony, the Official Choir of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo to explore the synergy of Nature and Music. The first encounter of this journey took place on Sunday, the 8th of August, 2021 under the theme “Vowels and consonants among stones and leaves”. The event garnered the approval and appreciation of all who were present, including Senior Prof. Preethi Udagama, Head of the Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, and several other members of the academic staff. The engaging discourse conducted by Vinuri Weerasinghe, Vidyani Kulatunga, and Thisura Senevirathne – alumni of the faculty, enthralled the audience; and the event which was proclaimed to be a novel and fruitful endeavor, concluded amidst wishes for another episode shortly.
In case you missed the event or want to revisit this valuable discussion, head on to the official YouTube channel of BEEZ, and gain some food for thought.
Thus ends the first episode of Nature’s Poem, and we bid you farewell with a reminder to stay tuned for the next leg of the journey!
