Emeritus Professor WD Ratnasooriya - One of the World Renowned Scientists
We are indeed proud to announce that the recently released list by the US-based Stanford University has included Emeritus Professor Wanigaseskera Daya Ratnasooriya in the top 2 per cent of the most-cited scientists, this bringing great honour and fame to the Department of Zoology and Environment Sciences, and the University of Colombo.
The selection of the top scientists was based on the number of citations of the research work which is an important measure of the scientific impact. Prof. Ratnasooriya has to date published 381 research papers, many of which are in high impact international journals, and has a total of 5059 citations of his work. His H-index (35) is astoundingly high. Based on his publications Prof. Ratnasooriya was awarded a D.Sc. in Life Sciences from the University of Peradeniya in 2008, which is a rare achievement for a Sri Lankan scientist, and a D. Sc. (Honoris causa) from the University of Colombo in 2016. He has made a staggering contribution to research through the training of postgraduate students – 9 MSc's, 15 MPhil's and 17 PhD's have been awarded under his supervision. He has received many prestigious awards – Presidential awards (5), CVCD Excellence award, General Research Committee award (Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science), Research achievement award (University Grants Commission), merit awards (National Science Foundation) and the Annual Research Award for six consecutive years (Faculty of Science, University Colombo). Emeritus Prof. Ratnasooriya has made numerous invaluable contributions both at the university and national levels, in the field of biology.
